Richard J. Upton, 82, of Brick, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Burnt Tavern Rehabilitation Center, Brick.
Mr. Upton was born in New Castle West, Co. Limerick, Ireland, and immigrated to the U.S. as an infant. He resided in the Bronx, N.Y., and Emerson, N.J., before moving to Brick 18 years ago, He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served from 1949-1951. He then joined the A & P Tea Co., and retired as a manager after 42 years. He played Gaelic football for Offaly from 1948-1955 and was a graduate of Rice High School in the Bronx. He was a member of the Princeton Commons Men’s Club.
Mr. Upton was predeceased by his son, Kevin R. Upton, his parents, Johanna and James Upton, and his siblings, John and James Upton, and Monica Upton Young and Brenda Upton Thomas. His family was his pride and joy. There was never a family event at which Richard, known as “Bumps,” wasn’t singing his favorite Irish songs, and he always had an Irish smile upon his face.
Mr. Upton is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Anne Marie McLoughlin Upton, his daughter, Maryanne Tino, his daughter-in-law, Janet Upton, his 4 beautiful grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Edward Thomas, of N.Y., and John McLoughlin and his wife, Eileen, of Bradley Beach, his sister-in-law, Joan McLoughlin Dedovich; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, on Saturday, June 23, 2012, from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dominic's Church, Brick, on Monday, June 25, 2012, at 10 A.M., followed by interment at the N.J. Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown, N.J.
