Elizabeth Jane Ulrich, 80, of Fredericksburg VA, recently of Sea Girt NJ, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA. Elizabeth was born and raised in East Newark and Harrison, NJ, the daughter of Philip and Anna Carey Krug and the younger sister of Philip and Robert. She was a longtime resident of Closter NJ before moving to Sea Girt and then Fredericksburg.
Elizabeth, better known as Betty, graduated valedictorian from Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington in 1950 and earned her B.A. in English from Chestnut Hill College in 1954. She later received her M.A. in English, graduating cum laude from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1968, and began a long career at Paramus Catholic High School, teaching English and serving as Chair of the English Department. She was a beloved teacher and dedicated many hours helping students and her school.
Betty married Patrick Peter Ulrich in 1954, and is survived by their four children and spouses, Patricia and Kevin Wiedel of Fredericksburg, VA, Peter and Parmelie Ulrich of Morristown, Joseph and Loreen Ulrich of Cresskill, and Anne-Marie and Stephen Rachman of East Lansing MI. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Steven Dodd, Ashley and William Ulrich, Morgan and Devon Ulrich, and Thomas Rachman. She was predeceased by her husband in 2010, and her son, Christopher.
Betty was devoted to her faith and helping others, serving the local community through the Social Concerns Ministry at St. Mark’s Church in Sea Girt, the Sea Girt Woman’s Club, and Meals on Wheels. For many years she enjoyed bicycling, walking and ocean swimming. She loved poetry and literature, nature, the ocean in all its seasons, and most of all, her friends and family.
Visiting will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, December 28 at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, December 29 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ. Contributions in Mrs. Ulrich’s memory may be made to St. Mark’s Social Concerns Committee, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt, NJ 08750
