Obituary for Garrett S. "Garry" Young

Garrett S. Young, 74, of Belmar, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017.
Garry was born in East Orange and had lived in Belmar since childhood. He was an executive with Jersey Central Power and Light for 27 years, in charge of transportation and having been responsible for the purchase of 100 vehicles, before retiring. He was a very civic-minded resident of Belmar, serving as a member of both the Belmar Volunteer First Aid Squad and Belmar Fire Department. He had over 57 years of service with the Fire Department, including having served as Chief. He was also active in politics and once ran for election as Belmar Mayor. Garry was proud of his grandfather, Roland Lawrence Young, who was a founder of Bell Labs and a holder of more than 300 patents.
Garry is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy Ballard Young. He is also survived by his sons, Stephen Young, of New Hampshire, and Andrew Young, of Florida, his grandson, Hunter Golightly, of NJ, with whom he was very close, and two grandchildren in NH. Also surviving are Garry’s sisters, Nancy Stires, of Brielle, and Dorothy Graff and her husband, Charles, of Ocean Twp., as well as two nieces.
A funeral service will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 7 PM.
