Obituary for Dr. James Charles Candy

Dr. James Charles Candy, 87, of Brick passed away peacefully on Monday, March 27, 2017 in Brick. Dr. Candy was born on September 27, 1929 in Crickhowell, South Wales. He was the oldest of 4 siblings. In 1954, he received BS and PhD from the University of North Wales in Bangor North Wales. He worked from 1954 – 1956 with S. Smith & Sons Guarded Weapons Department, an Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, England. He came to the United States in 1959 to take up an appointment as a research associate at the University of Minnesota. In 1960, he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey where he engaged in research in digital signal processing, including efficient encoding of video and signals. He also had an interest in methods for converting signals between digital and analog formats.
Dr. Candy is a fellow of the IEEE and has published 30 technical papers and holds 29 US patents. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. His book is entitled Oversampling Delta Sigma Data Converters Theory Design & Simulation by James Candy and Cabor C. Times (a classic Engineering Text)
He was predeceased by his 2nd wife, Mary Sanseigne in 2017; and by all of his siblings. Surviving is his 1st wife, Vivian Candy of Morristown; daughter, Ann C. Stein and her husband, Steven of Rutland, VT; and a step daughter, Kathy Sanseigne of Perry Hall, MD; and a grandson, David B. Stein of Manhattan, NY. All services are private. Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association of New Jersey.
