Obituary for Elmer Leo Curran

Elmer L. Curran, 86 of Wall Township passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Imperial Care Center, Neptune.
As a reporter, he worked for the Virginian Pilot, Norfolk, the Portsmouth Times, Portsmouth, Va., the Press and Times-Herald, Newport News, Va. and the Perth Amboy Evening News, Perth Amboy, NJ. He covered the Virginia and New Jersey legislatures.

Before retiring, he served in a number of roles at the Asbury Park Press, including that of night editor in the early 1970’s and later as editor of the paper’s first Sunday seniors page, called 50 Plus.
He retired as a copy editor with the Press in 1992. He received a number of community service honors during his career, including the Ernest W. Lass Memorial Award, at the Press.

Mr. Curran received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Thomas Edison State College, Trenton in 1975. He received the “Award for Outstanding Service to Society” from the Thomas Edison State College Alumni Association in 2002.

In addition to his newspaper career, he also served for 10 years with the 42nd Rainbow Division, NY and the 29th Infantry Division, Va. being discharged in 1957 as a first lieutenant, artillery.

Married in New York on July 17, 1954 to Edna (nee Boggia) Curran, he is survived by a son Thomas D. Curran and wife Diane (nee Savoth) of Middlebury, Vermont, a daughter Laura Pappas and her husband Peter of Brielle, a daughter Patricia (nee Curran ) Brown of Mount Laurel, and 4 grandchildren Tyler and Ryan, and Peter and Mary Kate, and his brother Robert Curran of Milwaukee, Wisc. and many nieces and nephews.

Born March 1, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John F. and Ethel (nee Shaw) Curran, He was also predeceased by his son Mark Edward in 1983 and seven of his eight siblings.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm and on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 9:30am until the time of the Funeral Ceremony at 10:00am at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, NJ 07719

Interment will be in the family plot in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.
