Obituary for Noel Neral

Noel Neral
Wilfred Noel Neral, 83, of Brick, and formerly of Wall, entered peacefully into eternal life on Sunday, May 7th, 2017. His wife of 62 years, Barbara, and several of his children were present at his side. Born near Johnstown, PA, he preferred to be known as Noel. He was the youngest son of Dragutin “Charles” and Emma Amann Neral and the “baby boy” doted on by his seven brothers and sisters.

The family moved to Point Pleasant when Noel was 11, after his father passed away and his brother Jim returned home from WWII. He worked on the Point Pleasant boardwalk for Mr. Martell as a young teenager, collecting nickels from bingo games. In time he learned to chain stitch customer’s names on hats. Even into young adulthood he could be found working weekends, flipping burgers for Martell’s. He developed a strong sense of loyalty. Martell had given him a job when Noel was twelve and ever after the Neral family patronized the Martell boardwalk empire.

Captain of the track team, Noel graduated from St. Rose High School in 1951. Here he developed his life motto, “If you can’t walk another step, it’s time to start running!” There is nothing he loathed more than a quitter.

While a student at St. Rose, he met the love of his life, Barbara Jennsch. They married on December 29th, 1954 and raised 6 children, living in Point Pleasant, Asbury Park, Wanamassa, Ocean and Wall Townships before retiring to Brick.

Noel served in the NJ National Guard for six years. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1960 with a BS in Accounting and became a CPA in 1961. He did this “the hard way” working two jobs and raising a growing family while going to night school. He was admitted as a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in May of 1962, as a fellow in the NJ society of CPA’s in 1967 and was a past president of the Monmouth County Chapter of the NJ Society of CPA’s. He was a partner in several accounting firms in Rahway, Manasquan, Westfield and Wall NJ, finishing his career as senior partner of Neral and Company, Wall, NJ. He mentored many young accountants and business professionals throughout his career.

He was an active member of the Rahway and Wall Kiwanis Clubs and a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, Council 658. He was often eager to contribute to worthwhile church and community endeavors.

He remained an enthusiastic Rutgers football and NY Giants fan throughout his life.
Noel enjoyed traveling, whether taking the kids on many family camping trips with all the extended Jennsch relations, touring Europe or taking a relaxing a cruise with his wife.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his brothers and sisters.

Loved by many, he is survived by his wife, Barbara Jennsch Neral. He is also survived by his children, their spouses and his grandchildren: Peg and John Helminski, of Cary, NC, and their children, Nate, Ben and Elizabeth Helminski; Michael and Shirley Neral, of Little Egg Harbor, and their children, Christine, Melissa and her husband Savvas Krashias, Jeremiah and his wife Bonnie Neral, and Jedediah Neral; Thomas and Suzanne Neral, of Brick, and their children, Andrew and his wife Sabrina Neral, and Jennifer and Peter Neral; Kate and Michael Honan, of Brick, and their daughter, Kerri Honan; Richard and Sherry Neral, of Point Pleasant, and their children, Allen, Amy and Sara Neral; and Robert and Maryanne Neral, of Wall, and their daughter, Emma Neral. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Angela Sousa, Landon and Owen Neral, and Louizos and Christiana Krashias. Always positive with a word of encouragement, quick wit or a willing song, he was the favorite uncle of dozens of nieces and nephews.

He loved to bring people together and celebrate just for the fun of it, frequently hosting family reunions and employee appreciation parties at his home in Wall Township.

This was a glass half full kind of man, one who grabbed life by the tail, took it for a helluva ride and lived it with joy. Even until the very end of life, he cracked jokes and tried to make people around him laugh.

The family expresses their deep gratitude to all of the caregivers at Sunnyside Manor of Wall for their exceptional care of Noel in his final year.

Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Rose Church, Belmar, on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 10 AM, followed by burial at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the St. Rose of Belmar High School Annual Fund, 607 7th Avenue, Belmar, NJ 07719.
