Obituary for Barbara M. Leahey (Mitchell)

Print
Barbara Mitchell Motley Leahey passed away Friday, August 25th at her home in Spring Lake, NJ, surrounded by her loving family.

Raised in White Plains, NY, Barbara is the sister of Joseph Mitchell of Dallas, TX and was preceded in death by her loving parents Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Maxwell Mitchell and brother Richard Mitchell. Barbara graduated from Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, CT, and attended the University of Toronto. Barbara was a member of St Catharine and St Margaret Parish in Spring Lake.

A gifted athlete, avid golfer and travel enthusiast - her home is filled with many trophies and souvenirs that often served as the impetus for memorable anecdotes about her numerous swimming titles at Westchester Country Club as a girl, the titles won at Spring Lake Golf Club and her frequent travels. She was happiest puttering in her garden and passing on her gardening know-how to her grandchildren.

Loving mother to Marianne Motley of Hoboken, NJ; Patricia Gavin and her husband Dr. J. Robert Gavin, Jr. of Hilton Head Island, SC; Kathleen Hedden of Spring Lake Heights, NJ; Elizabeth Pearson and her husband Michael of Lambertville, NJ and Woodbury, VT; Grace Stoddard and her husband Francis of Brielle, NJ; John P. Motley, Jr and his wife Inyoung of Oceanport, NJ; Joseph A. Motley III and his wife Noha of Houston, TX and Lieutenant Colonel Michael M. Motley, USMC and his wife Karen of Fredericksburg, VA and Washington, DC. And, a proud grandmother of 15 grandchildren: J. Robert Gavin III, Michael Gavin, Catharine Gavin, Cole Gavin, Duncan Hedden, Michael Stoddard, Olivia Stoddard, Madeliine Stoddard, Christine Motley, Katherine McClelland, John Joseph Motley, Peter Motley, May Motley, Mitchell Motley and Sydney Motley.
