Obituary for Charles A. Meringolo
Charles A. Meringolo peacefully left this world September 17, 2017 joining his wife of 70 years, Marie who passed the month before.
He was born in New York City in 1924 and spoke of his childhood raised in a cold water flat across from the Holland Tunnel with the joy and passion he would live the rest of his life. He loved doing odd jobs like selling newspapers to bring money home. He also loved going to see the Yankees and Rangers.
At 18 he joined the Marines and after basic training was sent to the Pacific in 1944. He fought in Iwo Jima, where he received a Purple Heart, Sai Pan and Marshall Islands.
Upon his return home, he met a dark-haired beauty named Marie, who he would tell anyone who would listen “I met her once and that was it.”
For the rest of his life he lived the Marine Motto Sempre Fidelis “always faithful” by example to his wife, children, family and friends. He was loyal, tough, honest, kind and loving ready to help one and all. It was his pleasure.
After 40 years he retired from New York Tel and moved from Brooklyn to Lakewood, NJ. He and his wife traveled in the US and Europe with their many friends and began attending reunions of the 4th Marine Division where he reminisced with old comrades about the battles they fought.
Charles is survived by his three children, Richard, Joyce and Michael; his son in law Jerry and daughter in law Olivia; his grandchildren, John, Maria, Kelly, Michael and Lauren; his wonderful great granddaughter Emma; his brother Anthony and his wife Judy.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. with an 8 p.m. Military Funeral Honors and Flag Folding Detail by the US Marine Corp at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd., Brick. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 26th at 9:00 a.m. at St. Dominic’s RC Church, Brick followed by an 11:30 a.m. Chapel Service at the NJ Veteran’s Cemetery, Wrightstown.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Marsoc Foundation, PO Box 2018, Temecula, CA 92593-2018 MarsocFoundation.org for Active Duty and medically retired members of the US Marine Corp.
