Obituary for Rev. Canon James E. Hulbert, DD

Rev'd. Canon James E. Hulbert, DD, entered the large life on September 22, 2017. Born in NYC, he went on to serve his country in the US Air Force. Upon his return from service, he graduated from Hobart College in 1949, and then entered the General Theological Seminary that autumn. Once ordained as priest, he faithfully served as Vicar at the parish of St. Luke’s in Dumont, and then Rector of St. Mark’s in West Orange and Holy Trinity in South River.
In 1970, Father Hulbert was made an honorary Canon of Trinity Cathedral in Trenton, NJ. Nashotah House Theological Seminary bestowed upon Father Hulbert an Honorary Doctorate, honoris causa. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Medical Center of Ocean County. (Point Pleasant Hospital)
In 1971, James was instituted as the VII Rector of the Church of St. Uriel the Archangel in Sea Girt. Over his eighteen year rectorship, Fr. Hulbert was the mentor to many young priests who were in the early stages of their priestly formation, and his dedication to the parish will forever be remembered. In September of 2010, the St. Uriel Parish Hall was dedicated to Canon Hulbert in thanksgiving for his many years of faithful priestly ministry.
James was predeceased by his sister Anna Louise Carey in 2008. He is survived by his nephew Bill Allen & his wife Dianne, as well as many beloved friends and relatives.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am Thursday, September 28 at the Church of St. Uriel the Archangel, Sea Girt. Burial will be at the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.
