Obituary for Herbert E. Richter

Herbert E.  Richter
Herbert E. Richter, 88 of Piscataway, died on Monday, September18, 2017. Born in Newark NJ, the son of Catherine (Schuller) and Herbert Richter. During WWII, he served as a messenger for Civil Defense, and then during the Korean War he served in the National Guard as part of the 102 Arm Cav Reg Co-C. He sacrificed high school sports, after his father's passing, to help support his family and then became a licensed professional land surveyor. As party chief for Clarke & Rapuano, he worked on projects including the NY Thruway. More than 25 years of his career was dedicated to Piscataway Township, NJ, where he retired and then started Richter & Berls, PLS, until he decided to fully retire. He was a founding member of the NJ Society of Professional Land Surveyors, where he held varying positions throughout his career.
Herb was blessed with more than 52 years of marriage with his loving wife Joan (Syseskey). They enjoyed their home town of Piscataway and considered their neighbors as part of their extended family. Herb took pride in working the Piscataway Fishing Derby for over twenty years. His love for fishing and camping lead him from Maine to the Florida Keys and parts in between. He and Joan made Big Pine Key, FL their winter home and later he moved to Summerland Key, FL.
Herb was predeceased by his wife Joan and sister Carol. He is survived by 7 nieces: Lynda LaBerge, Normon, OK; Mary (Steve) Goldsmith, Toms River, NJ; Ann (Timothy) Scheve, Philadelphia, PA; Grace (Robert) Kiever, Summerland Key, FL; Susan (Carl) Landgraf, Blairstown, NJ: Jane Syseskey, Lawrenceville, NJ; Barbara Magnussen, Spring Lake Heights NJ; and twelve grand nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catharine's Church, 215 Essex Avenue, Spring Lake, on November 25, 2017 at 10:30am, with burial to follow at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt.
