Patricia M. McGowan, 94, of Belmar, passed into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 19, 2017,
at home surrounded by her family. Born in Passaic, Patricia Mary Catherine grew up in Nutley. She was a graduate of the Washington School for Secretaries, Newark, and attended the Traphagen School of Design in New York City. She was an executive secretary for Hoffmann La Roche in Nutley prior to her marriage to Robert W. McGowan in 1953. She and her husband and family lived in Montclair, Maplewood and South Orange, where she was a Boy Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader, serving as Girl Scout Junior Consultant for Maplewood and South Orange. She was chairman of the class mothers at Seton Hall Prep and was a volunteer at Our Lady of Sorrows Grammar School. When the family moved to Belmar in 1974, she became active in the St. Rose PTA, where she started the Annual Palm Sunday Cake sale, and was an officer of the St. Rose Rosary Society. She sang in the Saint Rose Choir for twelve years. After the family moved to Spring Lake in 1977, she joined Saint Catharine’s Church, where she sang in the choir for over 20 years. She also became a Eucharistic Minister, a Lay Carmelite, and a member of two Renew groups. She and her husband Bob joined the Spring Lake Golf Club, where she became a member of the Nine Holers. She moved to Fairway Mews in Spring Lake Heights in 1998, before returning to Belmar in 2012.
Patricia was predeceased by her parents, John Patrick Hagerty & Eleanor Mildred Hagerty, and her siblings, Therese Strehl, Catherine Hagerty, John Hagerty, Mildred Bill and Ann Sullivan. She is survived by her sister Mary Ballman of Rouses Point, NY.
Patricia was also predeceased in 1993 by her loving husband, Robert W. McGowan. She is survived by her nine children and their spouses, Mary Guenther (Robert), Patricia McGowan, Anne Emerson (James), Dorothy Duddy (James) and Paul McGowan (Kerrin), all of Wall, Catherine McGowan of New York, NY, Robert McGowan (Ann Marie) of Berkeley Heights, Joseph McGowan (Claire) of Belmar and John McGowan (Nancy) of Point Pleasant.
She is also survived by her 20 grandchildren: Robert (Lexy), Timothy (Sara), Brian (Sara), Kate, Mary and Lauren Guenther, Kara McGowan, Megan (Derek) Wisz, Kelly (John) Ramus and Joseph McGowan, Kathleen and Linda Emerson, Donald and Colleen Duddy, Maura, Claire and Brian McGowan, and Kierstin, Shaun (Megan) and Shea McGowan; and her 15 great-grandchildren; Benjamin, Zachary and Tyler Guenther, Connor, Max, Noah and Flynn Guenther, Jack, Molly, and Luke Guenther, Abigail and Graham Ramus, Miles McGowan and Dylan Amato.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Friday, December 22, 2017, from 4-8 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, on Saturday, December 23, 2017, at 9 A.M., followed by interment at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Covenant House, at www.covenanthouse.org.
