Gene Stanley Jackson died peacefully on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at Manor By the Sea Nursing and Rehab in Ocean Grove, with his children at his side. “Grandpop” was born on July 8, 1929, in Asbury Park, NJ to Lillian and Stanley Jackson. The first son of thirteen children, “Bud” was the big brother all the others looked up to. He attended Roosevelt Grammar School in Neptune City until the seventh grade when he left school to work and help support his family. At age 17 he enlisted in the United States Army and within months was assigned to serve in Japan for over 2 years. After also serving in Alaska he was stationed at Fort Campbell in Kentucky where he served in the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment as a parachutist. While stationed there he met the love of his life, Beulah Mae Fox. Just a few months after meeting, the two were married in Cadiz Baptist Church, Cadiz, Kentucky on June 14, 1952. In 1953, Gene was honorably discharged holding the rank of Sergeant. Shortly thereafter, he and his new bride moved to his hometown of Neptune City where they purchased their first and only home. After 61 wonderful years in their home, Bud and Beulah spent their final days together at Manor By the Sea Nursing and Rehab. Although they often lamented the fact that they were no longer in their beloved home on 5th Avenue they always added, “…but we still have each other.”
After returning to New Jersey, Gene began his career of over 40 years as an auto mechanic with Stein Cadillac on Asbury Avenue, Neptune. During his decades of employment with Stein he proudly served many years as the Chief Union Steward representing his co-workers in labor matters and contract negotiations.
Bud was an active and long-time member of the Asbury Park-Wall Elks Lodge #128. He and Beulah enjoyed many social events and wonderful friendships with their fellow Elks. Gene’s favorite contribution to the lodge was cooking for their many functions. He took great pride in the meals that he prepared. His corned beef and prime rib were second to none!
Gene was predeceased by his loving wife Beulah Mae on April 7, 2017. He was also predeceased by his parents; brothers George, Stanley, Robert, and Donald; and sisters Joan, Jacqueline, Lillian, Diane, and Sally. He is survived by brothers Thomas and Frank; sister Carolee; daughter Ginger Lee Hauter, son George S. Jackson and his wife Doreen; four grandchildren Rebecca Corwin, David Jackson and his wife Beth, Philip Jackson and his wife Jacqueline, and Ryan Jackson; and three great-grandchildren Vivian Jackson, Luke Jackson, and Stella Jackson.
The Jackson family extends our heartfelt thanks to Susan and James Hewitson who were more than just neighbors to Granny and Grandpop. You were a special part of their lives and always there for them. Also, our gratitude to the wonderful staff of Manor By the Sea. Gene and Beulah came to you during the most difficult chapter of their lives. Your compassionate care surely gave them time together they could not have enjoyed otherwise.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Sunday, April 8, 2018, from 1-5 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Asbury Park-Wall Elks Lodge #128, 3409 West Bangs Avenue, Neptune, NJ 07753.
