Obituary for Gary Walter Horan

Gary Walter Horan Sr., age 75, of Tony Ct. in the Greenbriar section of Brick, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Shorrock Gardens. Born in Rockville Centre, NY, Gary was raised in West Hempstead, NY and has resided in Brick for the last 42 years.

Mr. Horan proudly served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis on the USS DuPont (DD 941). Amongst his many duties, he served as a Postal Clerk.

Gary worked as a Salesman for MESCO, in Thorofare, NJ for 25 years before his retirement.

Mr. Horan was a very devout Catholic and an integral member from the inception of Epiphany RC Church in Brick where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a Chaplain at Ocean Medical Center in Brick and was Warden for the Knights of Columbus Epiphany Council 8160. He was also an active member of the Veterans Association in his local community, Greenbriar.

Gary was known by family and friends as congenial, helpful, generous, and reliable. He would always have a smile to share and would be there to listen and help when he could.

Mr. Horan was involved in many good works. In addition to contributing to various charities, he also took an active role in helping others. There are many examples of these but those that stand out were his delivering prayers to those who could not attend Mass, as well as his yearly participation in the Heart Walk.

He is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Margaret Horan, and his son Gary W. Horan Jr.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Judith; his children, Andrew P. Horan and his wife Melanie of Manchester, Chris Horan and his wife Melissa of Brick and Susan R. Laird and her husband Jack of Jackson; his daughter in law, Joan Horan; his brothers, Bobby and Richie Horan and his six grandchildren.

Viewings will be held on Wednesday, April 11th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd., Brick. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 12th at 10 a.m. at Epiphany RC Church, 615 Thiele Rd., Brick, followed by the interment at the NJ Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family and friends of Gary ask that you simply remember him next time you do a kind gesture for a family member, friend, or stranger. If you would like to do something more formal, please make a small donation to your favorite charity in his name.
