Obituary for Gene Lavin

Gene  Lavin
Gene Lavin, 84, of Spring Lake, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018.
Gene was born in Ballaghderreen, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. He came to the U.S. in 1963, settling in Astoria, Queens. He owned and operated the Lanterner Bar for several years, before owning and operating the Clover Bar (today known as Gibney’s) on Broadway in Astoria, for many years before retiring. Gene was an avid sportsman who enjoyed playing golf and watching Rangers and Giants games. He was a soft-spoken man who enjoyed maintaining his home in Spring Lake, where he had resided for 25 years. He also enjoyed vacationing in Hollywood Beach, Florida.
Gene was predeceased by his brothers, James Lavin, of Astoria, Patrick Lavin, of Sydney, Australia, and Joseph Lavin, of Co. Roscommon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Elizabeth (nee Hourican), his sisters, Margaret Mary Neary, of Queens, N.Y., and Kathleen Duffy, of Co. Mayo, Ireland, as well as by numerous nephews and nieces in Ireland, England, New York and Sydney, and cousins in the New York area.
Visiting will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Thursday, April 26, 2018, from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, on Friday, April 27, 2018, at 10:30 A.M., followed by entombment at St. Catharine’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene’s memory may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, at www.myasthenia.org.
