Obituary for Dorothy B. Flay (McGuirk)

Dorothy B. Flay lived every day with a zest for life and a never-ending desire to make everyday fun.

Born in 1931 to John and Pauline McGuirk in Brooklyn, New York, Dorothy spent most of her professional career working in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries as a trademarks specialist in New York City.

As a single mother in her 30’s and 40’s, she yearned for her weekends at the New Jersey shore in Sea Girt and Spring Lake, eventually moving there to the home she lived in permanently until her death on Monday, April 23rd of this year.

Anyone who knew Dorothy in her later years was quite aware of the things she loved and the people she adored.

Dorothy always had cats in her life. They played an important role in her happiness as well as the happiness of her family. As a young girl growing up in Ridgewood, Queens in New York her first cat was named Squeaky and then had many others through her years namely Marshmallow, Pumpkin, Smokey, Cocoa and Mini. She would be thrilled that her feline family members were mentioned in her notice.
Her favorite entertainment was taking weekly trips to the Borgata Hotel and Casino where she was well known as an avid slot player and a fan of a chocolate martini or two.

Dorothy Barbara Flay is survived by her former husband Bill, her son, Bobby and her loving granddaughter, Sophie. Her energy and spirit will be missed by all that knew her. She would have been 87 on May 20.
