Obituary for Ann Marie Flanagan (Lillis)

Print
Ann Marie Flanagan, 95, of Interlaken, NJ, passed away peacefully on June 19 in Long Branch, NJ.

Ann was born in Jersey City, NJ to Peter and Mary (Kelly) Lillis on September 1, 1922. She attended St. Lucy’s Grammar School and later, Ferris High School, both in Jersey City, where she met the love of her life, William J. Flanagan (Bill) – son of Nora Tubridy and William Flanagan Sr. Ann and Bill married on June 16, 1945 and raised a beautiful family of five children, Kathleen, Patricia, Eileen, Bill Jr. and John. Ann loved the Jersey Shore, spending summers in Allenhurst from 1950 and moving from Jersey City to live year-round at the shore in 1968. She and her family spent many sunny days at the Allenhurst Beach Club. She enjoyed all the Shore had to offer, including Monmouth Park Race Track, OId Orchard Country Club, the Garden State Arts Center, Illiano’s Cafe, and Strollo’s Ice Cream. She had a wide circle of friends, was active at St. Mary’s Church, and an enthusiastic member of the “Birthday Club”. She became the proud matriarch of a large family that she loved above all else. She was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage, and well-known for her quick Irish wit. She visited her parents’ family homes in Ireland often, and was close with her extended Irish family especially in Kellystown, County Sligo. She was famous for her annual St. Patrick’s Day dinners with her legendary corned beef and Irish soda bread. Everyone who knew her loved her – and Annie loved them all right back.

Ann was predeceased by her husband Bill, her son John, her daughter Patricia, her granddaughter Caitlin Rochon, her son-in-law Jim Roper, her parents Peter and Mary, and her sisters Margaret and Eleanor. She is survived by her daughters Kathleen (Rhéo Rochon) and Eileen (Roper), her son Bill (Susan), her daughter-in-law Kerry Flanagan, her son-in-law Pete Stefanile, her grandchildren Danielle Rochon, Rheo Rochon, Michael Rochon, Jenna Roper, Michael Roper, Kelsey Flanagan (Hampton), John Flanagan, Robert F. Flanagan, Patrick Flanagan, Brian Flanagan, Robert J. Flanagan, Matthew Flanagan and 9 great grandchildren.
