Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty " Marquard (Ott )

Elizabeth "Betty " Marquard (Ott )
Elizabeth, “Betty,” Marquard (née Ott) lived for 99 years and 147 days. She was born in Terra Alta, West Virginia to Bryan and Frances Ott soon after the end of World War I. She had an older sister, Virginia, and eventually, a younger sister, Rita. Amid the Great Depression, she met the love of her life, William Marquard, and they married soon after the start of World War II. While Bill was serving in Europe, Betty welcomed their first child, Mary Beth, 74 years ago, in Santa Barbara, California. When the war ended, the new family settled in Cleveland, Ohio and soon grew with the additions of William, Coletta, Robert, and Francis. A job moved the family from Ohio to Pompton Plains, New Jersey 58 years ago. Bill and Betty’s first grandchild was born in 1968, with 11 more following over the next 22 years. In 1981, Betty and Bill moved to Fort Myers, Florida to enjoy retirement, though, Bill unfortunately passed away only 3 years later.

Starting in the mid-1980s, Betty became a member of Our Lady of Light Church, volunteering in their office, while simultaneously living as an inter-continental grandmother, schlepping between family homes in New Jersey to New Mexico, to help her children raise their children, and their grandchildren. Age eventually slowed her down. She passed away at Claremont Care Center on Saturday, August 25. Betty lived to be with her family - always up for a card game, ready to step in with a hug, or lend a helping hand. Although she died 219 days shy of the goal of her 100th birthday, she had a long life, well lived, and enjoyed enumerable laughs, limitless love, and engendered an unmeasurable impact on the lives of the family she shepherded: 5 children, 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Peter’s Church in Point Pleasant Beach on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 11am. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Betty’s name to Claremont Center Activities Director, Lonnie Hulse, at 1515 Hulse Rd, Point Pleasant, NJ 08742, (732) 295-9300. Please note Recreation Resident fund on the memo line of the check.
