Obituary for William D. Wimmer

William D. Wimmer, 77, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away at home on Tuesday, September 25, 2018.
Mr. Wimmer was born in Nutley to the late William F. and Mary (Lynch) Wimmer. His family moved to Spring Lake when he was a child and Bill has been a Shore resident since then. He graduated from St. Rose High School and attended Seton Hall University. He was a heavy machinery operator in the construction industry, and worked for Harris Bros. for many years, before retiring. He was a bartender for many years at Laugh’s, Doolan’s, and the Manasquan Elks. Bill was an Exempt Member of the Spring Lake Heights Fire Co., where he had served for many years as Engineer. He was active in coaching youth sports for many years, with CYO, Little League, and Pop Warner and PeeWee football. Bill was also a Life Member of the Elks (Lodge #2534, Manasquan), as well as an avid gardener and animal lover.
Mr. Wimmer is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Joy (Matthews). He was predeceased by his first wife, Anna Marie, in 1993 and a son Joseph in 1979. Also surviving are his children, Mary Anne Frey, and her husband Larry, of Belmar, and William Wimmer, of Brick, as well as his stepchildren, David H. Megill and his wife Becky, of AZ, Rebecca J. Megill, of Spring Lake Heights, and Matthew Megill and his wife Crystal, of Haddon Heights. Bill is also survived by his grandchildren, Steven, Jason, Ethan, Christine and Sophia Megill, by his sister, Joan Watson, of NH, and by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and Maureen Wimmer, of MD, and Jack and Buffy Wimmer, of TX, as well as nephews and nieces, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 1-5 P.M. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Church, Spring Lake, on Monday, October 1, 2018, at 10:30 A.M., followed by burial at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation, at www.alzfdn.org. Condolences may be sent via www.obrienfuneralhome.com.
