Obituary for George F. Wynne

George Francis Wynne, 84 of Wall Township passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018 peacefully at his home with his devoted wife Catherine at his bedside. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from St. Francis College with a B.A. in History in 1959. He advanced in Classical Studies, Latin and Greek at St. Joseph’s Seminary, NY. In 1965 he was ordained a RC Priest for the Diocese of Brooklyn. George was assigned to parishes in the Brooklyn Diocese, ministering to the poor. In 1971, he petitioned and received a Papal Dispensation and received permission to be married to Catherine Costello. During his transition from religious life, he became an Iron Worker of Local # 40, New York and bravely scaled the iron skyscrapers of Manhattan.
In 1978, he entered Federal Government Service for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was later appointed an Administrator of US Army Family Counseling Programs for over 15 years. George retired in 2000 and became a Certified Hospice Volunteer.
He was an active member of Pax Christi, USA, and was very active in the Catholic Church renewal. He was a national representative of the The Voice Of The Faithful, (VOTF) and a member of the American Catholic Council, ACC. George and his wife were Lectors and Communicants at various Catholic Churches.
George and Catherine have resided in Wall Twp. for 19 years. Prior to this they had lived in Neptune City, Metuchen, and Belle Harbor, Queens, NY.
George was predeceased by his parents, the Honorable Edward and Elizabeth (nee Timms) Wynne and his siblings Edward and John Wynne, Mary Ann Turbitt and Elizabeth Lympany.
He is survived by his devoted wife Catherine (nee Costello) Wynne, his 2 sons and their wives Andrew and Stefanie Wynne of Ocean Twp. and Timothy and Elvira Wynne of Chandler, AZ, his 3 grandchildren Leanna, Dylan, and Vanessa Wynne and his brother Joseph Wynne of Crozier, Va.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 11:00am at Trinity Episcopal Church, Asbury Park. Please go directly to the Church on Monday. Private burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 503 Asbury Ave., Asbury Park, NJ 07712 in memory of George.
