Obituary for George V. Erickson Sr.

George V. Erickson Sr.
George V. Erickson, Sr., 84, of Brick, NJ, Co-Founder of Rayge Candy Company, passed away at home on April 3, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Lois (nee Wright), sister Barbara and Steve Angelus of Florida, four sons: George, Jr. and Joan of Jackson, Thomas and Marybeth of Brick, William and Cindy of Plano, Texas, and Pastor Philip and Cindy of Galloway; 11 grandchildren: George III, Katherine, Thomas Jr., Amy Tschinkel, William Jr., Matthew, Nicholas, Philip Jr., Melissa Clayton, Samantha Mears, and Hannah; 6 great-grandchildren, and 5 nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Amelia, in 1984, his father, Ray Sr., in 1989, his brother Ray Jr., in 1978, and his nephew, Stephen Erickson, in 2003.
George was raised in Newark and graduated from West Side High School in 1948. He purchased a home in Brick, NJ after marrying in 1958, and lived there until his death. George loved spending time with his family, especially relaxing by the pool in the summer, and playing with his two dogs.
George was happiest when managing his business, and he remained actively involved his entire life. He founded Rayge Candy with his brother, Ray Erickson, Jr. in March 1951. They distributed packaged candy to small Mom & Pop superettes in New Jersey, first out of a small storefront in Bay Head, then constructing a warehouse in Herbertsville, Brick, in 1955. George took over company operations as President in 1964. As times changed, and customers opened larger, more modern stores, George successfully oversaw the transition to the new age of supermarkets. He loved the fact that his business and family were intertwined and considered his employees, customers, and suppliers part of his family.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. A service will be held Friday at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations in George’s memory to either Brick Presbyterian Church, 111 Drum Point Road, Brick, NJ 08724, or to Jersey Shore Baptist Church, 216 South Wrangleboro Road, Galloway, NJ 08205.
