Obituary for Marjorie C. Furlong (Biroc)

Marjorie Camille Furlong (nee Biroc), age 92, passed away quietly surrounded by her family at the home of her loving daughter Pamela on Saturday, May 27, 2017.

In her final days, she reminisced about her wonderful childhood summers at Great Kills on Staten Island. It is certainly fitting that on Memorial Day weekend, to kick-off her favorite season of summer, Marjorie felt moved to embrace her spirit, let go of her earthly body, and to go join her many old friends and family at the infamous summer cabin on the Arthur Kill, where it can't be promised that she isn't once again getting into trouble and having the time of her life.

Born on July 6, 1924, Marjorie was the daughter of Andrew and Amelia Biroc of Staten Island. She attended Curtis High School and married her high school sweetheart, Clifford J. Parker on January 8, 1944, just days before he was to depart for Europe in WWII. Only two months later, a Navy Officer appeared at her door with a telegram, "Cliffy" had been killed in his first assignment, fighting Nazi planes over the Bay of Biscay. And so this weekend Marjorie has joyfully crossed over to once again hear "Cliffy's" voice and see his smiling face.

Marjorie was one of the fortunate who find true love twice in a lifetime. She fell in love with Joseph F. Furlong, himself seriously wounded at Utah Beach in Normandy, and they married in Staten Island on June 12, 1948. They had a great life together filled with laughter, family and friends and summers spent at the Jersey shore. Together they had two loving daughters, Patricia Furlong Farnkopf, Brick, and Pamela Furlong Leonard, Manasquan. They lived on Staten Island until Joe retired in 1977, then moved to Shore Acres, in Brick. Marjorie love her local club, the Hummingbirds, and bus trips to Atlantic City.

Marjorie is survived by her "older" brother, Gene Biroc, 90, of Brick, who she loved dearly and who will dearly miss her.

Marjorie will also be missed by her two son's in law, William Farnkopf and John Leonard, and her three grandchildren, Lisa Farnkopf of Spring Lake, Brian Farnkopf of Brick, and Sarah Furlong-Leanord of Manasquan, as well as her great-grandchildren Hudson Farnkopf and Bowen Farnkopf and her many niece's and nephews who referred to her as “Auntie”.

Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Rt. 35, Wall, NJ. A Funeral Service will be at the funeral home Wednesday at 10am. Burial will be at Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island, NY. For more information or to send condolences please visit www.obrienfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to St. Mary’s By the Sea Episcopal Church, 804 Bay Ave. Pt. Pleasant, NJ 08742.
