Mary “Maura McDermott” Lumley, 78, of Wall, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Maura was born in Co. Kerry, Ireland. As a young woman she had a diverse career, working as a secretary in Dublin, for the Home Office in London, and for UNESCO in Paris. She came to the United States in 1987, and lived in San Francisco for a year, before marrying Luke “McDermott” Lumley in 1988. After settling in Wall with Luke, she managed their business, McDermott Waterproofing, until Luke’s death in 2015. Maura was an active parishioner at St. Catharine’s Church, serving as a reader and Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed spending time at The Atlantic Club and on the Spring Lake boardwalk, and had a life-long interest in cooking, fashion and foreign travel.
Maura was predeceased by her beloved husband Luke in 2015. She was also predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Bridget Cotter, a brother, Richard Cotter, and a brother-in-law, Jack Whelan. She is survived by her siblings and their spouses, Bobby and Mary Cotter, Co. Kildare, Nicholas and Dori Cotter, Co. Limerick, Maurice Cotter and his partner, Hannah Horgan, Co. Limerick, Siobhan and Tom Bolger, Dublin, Nancy Whelan, Dublin, and Breda and Dan Cotter, of N.J. Maura was also survived by many loving nephews and nieces, and numerous friends.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Sunday, August 27, 2017, from 2-5 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, on Monday, August 28, 2017, at 10:30 AM. Maura’s cremated remains will be buried alongside those of Luke, in the family plot in Dublin, following a memorial Mass there. In lieu of flowers, donations in Maura’s memory may be made to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Oncology Unit, c/o Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation, 1340 Campus Parkway, Neptune, NJ, 07753.
