Norma S. Westervelt, 84, of Spring Lake, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017.
Norma was born in Neptune and raised in Neptune City. She had lived in Spring Lake for over 60 years. She and her late husband, Tom, owned and operated Sofield Supply Co., of Spring Lake, for many years, until selling the business in 1997. Volunteering was important to her and Norma gave back to her community in many ways. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Spring Lake, where she served on numerous committees, was Chairwoman of the Shawl Ministry, sang in the Choir, and was involved in the United Methodist Women’s Group. She volunteered for many years fundraising for the American Cancer Society, served as a member of the Spring Lake Board of Adjustment and as a Girl Scout leader, and belonged to the Spring Lake Garden Club and HW Mountz PTA. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Norma was adored by her family and adored them in return. She was present at all milestone events and was the center of holiday celebrations. She had many close friends as well and enjoyed spending time playing tennis and bridge and going out for meals through the years.
Norma was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas E. Westervelt, in 2004, as well as by her parents, Norman C. and Helen (Miller) Sofield. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Thomas E. and Patricia Westervelt, Jr., of Spring Lake, Nancy W. and Brian J. Mulvey, of Westfield, and Judith W. Long, of Vt. She was the beloved grandmother of Lindsey Gordon and her husband Christopher, Thomas E. Westervelt III, Katie Rae Mulvey and her husband, Samuel Stolper, Carolyn Mulvey, Kevin Mulvey, Derek Long and his fiancé Anastasia Pappas, and Emily Long, and great-grandmother of Ayden Thomas Long. She is also survived by her sister, Lois Ulmer, of Va.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, from 2-4 and 6:30-8:30 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. Spring Lake, on Thursday, September 7th, at 11 AM, followed by interment at Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan. Donations in Mrs. Westervelt’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 907 4th Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ 07762.
