Herbert Conrad Koffler, Jr of Wall, NJ died peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 18th 2018.
Herb was born in Elizabeth, NJ on August 9th 1928 to Herbert Conrad Koffler and Isabelle Ballentine Koffler and grew up in Irvington, NJ as an only child for fourteen years until his sister Isabelle was born. Upon graduating high school, he, like so many others in the “greatest generation,” joined the Navy one month before his 18th birthday. He served two years before being discharged and returning to New Jersey, where he began his long career in landscape construction and nursery farming. A testament to his knowledge and artistry, his designs are still planted at properties around the Shore decades later. After retiring from his business, Herb worked for Ocean County Vocational Schools for another 15 years.
On October 14th 1950, Herb married the love of his life, the beautiful and graceful Alice Mae Skold. They remained devoted to each other for 68 years before his departure. Herb and Alice were lifelong residents of Wall Township, where they ran their business HC Koffler and Son (he was the son) and raised their four children Herbert Conrad Koffler III AKA Butch of Lakeland, FL; Allison Koffler (late) of Shark River Hills, NJ; Barbara Ann DiVito of Ashburnham, MA; and William Alexander Koffler of Bristol, RI. Herb was the moral compass for his children and never stopped encouraging them to better themselves and the world around them. His work ethic was incredible and he passed that to his children, of whom he was so proud.
Herb loved the Jersey Shore where he spent countless evenings entertaining family and friends with the bounties of his fruitful gardens. He was a gifted chef on his beloved Weber grill! In addition to his family and friends, he gave to his community. He served 13 years on the Wall Board of Education where he was integral in the building of both the Old Mill and Intermediate school. He served as President of the Board for many years. Herbert was also an umpire for the Jersey Shore men’s fast pitch softball league, an avid reader, and enjoyed building model airplanes.
Herb touched so many lives and tried to make the world a better place for everyone. In death he leaves his wife, loving children, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Herb also leaves many lifelong friends, among them Elizabeth Proctor Scott of Wall and Andy and Sue Larson of Wall, all of whom he loved as family. Herb was preceded in death by his younger sister, Isabelle and his daughter, Allison.
Love, devotion, tenacity, fairness and understanding are the best words to describe his life. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him but none more than his gracious wife and loving family. May God grant Herb a well-deserved rest and a reunion with those he loved and lost before his departure from this world.
A memorial service will be Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 2 PM at the Wall United Methodist Church.
