Glenn's classmate

I'm sorry to hear about Glenn's passing. I was one of Glenn's original classmates starting in 1956 in Miss Rodt's kindergarten class.  We then proceeded to go through all of the Hawthorne New Jersey's public education system winding up as part of the Class of 1969.

I always thought of Glenn as a nice guy or nice kid.  There came a time in 1962 when he invited me to his house after school which I would call an opportunity to become a real friend (having previously never being at Glenn's house).  I had a chance to go into his very nice tree house in the front yard that I was told was built by his father.

Eventually, we were in the garage and Glenn was looking through a few piles of slightly old newspapers.  He pulled out one of those Sunday magazine sections which were very common in the time before computers.  On the cover was a full page photo of the astronaut John Glenn and our conversation was very close to this:

Glenn:  This is my hero.  Me:  Who's that?  Glenn:  It's John Glenn.  Me:  Oh yeah.  I've heard of him.  He's alright.

Following that exchange, I could see that Glenn was thinking we don't have enough in common to be great pals with me being so dismissive of Colonel Glenn.  So, we never became close friends.  But, I still remember how Glenn spoke to me from time to time about his fondness for trailer trucks - during school hours of course.
